Event highlights:
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the Vincent Chin case “was a deep lesson…that our criminal justice system behaves differently because of the color of your skin.” “We have a long way to go,” he said, citing the police killing of George Floyd. “But we are moving in the right direction.”
Michigan Senator Stephanie Chang, who wiped away tears as she spoke, said rising anti-Asian hate in the wake of the Covid pandemic, reminds us that “we still have so much more to do, but in many ways we are still where we were.” She said the Vincent Chin 40th will provide “an important opportunity for us to reflect.”
Helen Zia, a founding member of American Citizens for Justice and the representative of the Vincent & Lily Chin Estate, said Chin’s murder and the subsequent miscarriage of justice "was the springboard and catalyst for the modern Asian American civil rights movement. It truly helped build a multiracial, multicultural, united for equal justice and human dignity, and Detroit was its epicenter. Now, in 2022, we unfortunately see too many parallels and history repeating itself in our present-day fight for civil rights and justice.”
