Releases Tools to Support Communities in Crisis

When Anti-Asian Hate Comes to Your Town – How to Deal with the Media and Funding

July 9, 2024 (PHILADELPHIA) – The Vincent Chin Institute today released new tools to support communities facing anti-Asian hate and violence. The Vincent Chin Institute (VCI) developed Crisis Communications, Dealing with the News Media FAQ and Crisis Funding & Emergency Donations FAQ to support survivors, families, and community members when they or their family or community face hate or violence.

When tragedy strikes a community in the form of anti-Asian hate, many Asian American communities around the country must face the crisis without a solid infrastructure of nonprofit organizations and advocates. These FAQs, available online and in printfor free, give people tangible tools to seize control of their own narrative and drive their own strategies for recovery, fortification, and healing.

VCI, founded by Helen Zia, who helped organize the Asian American-led civil rights movement stemming from the tragic Vincent Chin murder in Detroit 42 years ago, developed the tools over the past four decades of building unity and coalitions in the face continuing anti-Asian hate and violence. “Our diverse Asian American community of 24 million is strong and resourceful,” said Zia. “Our community members, leaders, and influencers asked for these FAQs, because we know that owning the information, narrative, and funding strategies to take on these challenges to our communities will also mean owning our own power and destiny.”

VCI reaches out to empower Asian American and diverse communities, especially where there is little access to Asian American advocacy groups – taking lessons from the national Asian American-led civil rights movement for justice after Vincent Chin was murdered in 1982.
